After a few years of toiling with the idea of having a dog, I finally decided to take in a pit bull. Her name is Deja. I am both excited and nervous at the prospect of being a dog mommy. I mean, cats are easy. You just feed them and pet them now and then and *poof* you are an awesome cat momma. A dog requires daily walks, more vet visits, and WAY more attention. It's as close to having a child as I'll ever get. I know it's nothing like having an actual child, but it is more akin to being a parent than just having cats, that's for darn sure.
Now I can't just take off for a weekend and put extra food and water in bowls. I actually have to find a dog sitter. That is the reason I put off having a dog for so long. I didn't want to have to deal with being tethered to my home every weekend. But I figure this will save me money, and make me act far more grown up. 'Cause let's face it, I'm 38 going on 12 most of the time.
The dog has been my niece's since she was a pup. My niece just moved in to an apartment and has to keep her crated all day. She finally decided that wasn't fair so she needed to find the doggy a home. I couldn't bear to see Deja go with someone we didn't know. This way, if Ashlee ever gets a house more fitted to having a dog, she can have Deja back. I had Ashlee bring her over on Saturday. She has lived with cats before but I wanted to see if she interacted with or went after them. The cats are going to be pissed at me for about a month, but they'll get used to it.
While I'm at work the doggy door will be closed and Deja will have the run of my huge backyard. I have a shed with a doggy bed in it should she need shelter, and plenty of shade from the trees. She is a little portly as is the habit of folks who live in my home, so the extra exercise will do her well. The kitties will get used to being cooped up in the house all day. It'll give them respite from that new large creature who is invading their space.
So hesitantly I have agreed to be the new protector, care giver, and lover of this beautiful creature. I am very, very scared that I won't do a good job. I feel like maybe I'm not responsible enough to be in charge of another living being that isn't as easy to take care of as a cat. What's funny is she will be making me domestic more than I am her. I look forward to the rewards, and troubles, of being a new dog mommy.
This is Deja, and I'm already madly in love with her.

Aww she's beautiful. I love pit bulls and despite their reputation, they are actually quite
ReplyDeleteaffectionate animals. I'm so jealous. I would love to have a dog in my home again. :)
She is the cutest! And so sweet. Pits have always been my favorite breed. They have a bad reputation because of horrible owners. They are great dogs.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful dog. I'm sure you'll be a great dog mommy. And yes, as someone who has 4 dogs, let me tell you, it really is like being a parent. Kids cost more, but dogs take just as much work - you have to feed them, bathe them, keep them healthy and happy, entertain them, etc. It's a big job but it's always worth it.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to it. Four dogs? Jeebus cripes man!
DeleteAnd your blog yesterday had me in absolute stitches. The picture of the short Asian guy that "looked just like him you swear" had me in tears.
When guys are creepy to me at work I'm such a smartass jerk back that it only happens once.
Congratulations! I would love to take in a pit bull -- or any dog, really, but we already have 4 cats. I miss the days when we could just go away for the weekend, but our 2 oldest are in their late teens and have to have medications, and stuff like that, so we need to get a sitter. The days of leaving food out are over! Good luck!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Bee! Yeah, I am sure I'll be bummed the first time I want to get away for the weekend and can't find a sitter, but I'll get over it.
DeleteI'm sure it'll be fine. Dogs are easier to take with you than cats, too!
DeleteWhat a cutie! Hope the kitties don't get too mad at you and that Deja will make a nice playmate for them!
ReplyDeleteThe kitties are still under the bed. I see them very rarely. Once they realize the big thing doesn't want to eat them I think they'll be good.
DeleteAww, I love the way she sits with her hind legs sticking right out in front of her! She's adorable!
ReplyDeleteShe has to. She's fat like her momma. Haha!
DeleteWait, this isn't part of your plan to start a Michael Vick-like underground dog fighting ring, is it? (Of course I know it's not.) Do the cats not get along with Deja? Or vice versa? I'm actually jealous. Some people have a biological clock making them ache for babies. Me, I walk by cute dogs and get dog wanting pains.
ReplyDeleteHow in the hell did you find out about my dog fighting ring?
DeleteDogs are soooo much more work than cats! But, I can't imagine my life without Kodi. I love him so much, and the good far outweighs the hassles. I am so excited to start hearing Deja stories! And you are going to be a fantastic dog mom. Are you kidding me??
ReplyDeleteShe is already spoiled. She's had three walks today. :)
DeleteI grew up with dog(s), but haven't had one in years. they are a lot smellier than cats, but so much more personable. And it's always hilarious watching a dog get bullied by a tiny cat!
ReplyDeleteShe is the best dog ever. Totally mellow and lovey.
Deleteshe is beautiful and i am so glad you took her in!
ReplyDeleteyes, the cats will be pretty pissed for a while. whaddya gonna do!
i love dogs. and cats. my twatty landlord won't let me get a dog, so i stick with the two cats. we keep each other happy, so it works. but someday i'd like to have a dog or two too!
p.s. i think it is a good sign that you are worried about being a good parent to this dog. i think that is a VERY GOOD SIGN. just like people that worry about being a good parent to kids. there is A LOT to worry about, so it is troubling when people are too cavalier with thoughts of parenting!
ReplyDeleteI'm worried about being a good dog mommy who can also make sure the cats are healthy and okay with her here. It's going to be trying for a month or so.
DeleteAwwwwww!!!!! She is soooooooo cute!!!!! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I love her. She went straight to her doggy bed last night. She was so good.
DeleteCongrats new Mommy! You're a lot more courageous than I am. I gave brief thought to getting a doggy pal for Derv after Meo died, but I'm just not equipped to raise a dog on my own.
ReplyDeleteYou'll do great! And the cats will adjust. Lucky Deja (and Ashlee) to have you.
Holy hell Reanna how are you? Totally missed you. The dog is doing awesome. Molly is currently hissing at her but at least the kitties come out of the bedroom now.
