I rarely do single restaurant features but I visited this place on Wednesday for lunch and I thought I needed to give it a shout out. I joined a friend of mine. She owns what is probably the most popular bakery in Sacramento. Someone had told her to go to this place so when she invited me I said, "Heck yes!" We had a great meal and got to talk to the owner at length.
MacQue's is a no nonsense bbq joint with a simple menu. He does ribs, brisket, chicken, hot links, pull pork, and the like. The sides are all down home too: mac and cheese, greens, rolls, and muffins. It is located in an industrial part of South Sacramento in a non-descript strip warehouse area that we almost missed. But good lord almighty am I glad we didn't. We shared a half slab of pork ribs, a beef brisket sandwich, mac and cheese, and greens. It was finger lickin' good. Seriously, best ribs I've had in a very long time. I don't eat bbq often, but every few months when I decide to, I'm going back to MacQue's.
The owner was talking about how lately they've seen a 20% decline in business. He has lived in town for over 45 years, and has had the business for about 26. It's the places like these that I want to get everyone out supporting. So many people won't leave the "grid" to support real family owned amazing joints like MacQue's. We need to fix this.
He has quite an extensive knowledge about the food scene in the area. We talked about some our favorite old places that are declining or closing as the kids of the original owners let the places go to pot. He himself encouraged his son to get an education, so now his son doesn't want to come back and work the 16 hour days it takes to run a successful restaurant. I thought that was a shame. I encouraged him to find someone who loved the place who he could train to take over. It would be a cryin' ass shame to see this place go away. So many of my favorite small places have been going the way of the dinosaur lately.
So if you live in the Sacramento area, or if you are planning a visit, stop by MacQue's. Tell him the lady who was fond of Zelda's, and Palermo who came with Marlene sent ya. You will not be disappointed.
I was excited to hear that even though the restaurant business is going down, his bbq sauce line is doing awesome. It's good sauce. Here is a link to their site where pretty soon you can order the sauce online: MacQue's BBQ
It is really important to me that we keep places like this doing well and support the folks who have been feeding people for decades around town. Please support MacQue's. Not like after you see a picture like the one below, you really need my convincing.

I love how you're supporting a local business that you're clearly very fond of! It's sad, but in times with a recession, people start eating out less. Small businesses are the ones that suffer the most. Sounds yum and if I'm even in the area, I will check it out!! :)
ReplyDeleteI do this constantly. I hate to see small businesses suffering. The issue here is there used to be an army depot, and other places that employed THOUSANDS of workers who would visit for lunch, or pick up dinner on the way home. Now since he's a little out of the way, people just go elsewhere. A lot of businesses shut down in the area. It's sad.
ReplyDeleteOh, how I want to sink my teeth into those ribs! They look delicious.
ReplyDeleteIt kills me to think of all the little out of this world spots that may go under, because of the economy. So sad. It's happening over here in Jersey too and I hate it :(
They were!
ReplyDeleteMe too. There are so many mediocre restaurants that people here go to in droves, because of the location. I want people to get out of the grid (midtown) to explore great food!
Mmm, sounds good. Will have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteIt is super good Ally. I would go with you, but I filled my bbq quotient for the month. I can't go again for a while. :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe your career quest could lead you to taking over a place like MacQue's?
ReplyDeleteMy car got totaled at the beginning of the year and I decided to try living car free. Since then, I've had a great time exploring all the independent shops and restaurants in my area. I don't think I could go back to eating or shopping at chain places.
There's something very satisfying about being able to support local families.
You just spoke my love language...bbq. I am actually going to my childhood, growing up town where my Granny lived tomorrow and we are frequenting Zimmerhanzel's. Best bbq ever. Make you wanna smack your Mama. So I am all about supporting local. I am very much moving in this direction in my choices for what businesses I frequent.
ReplyDeleteI will have to share my experience tomorrow. We grew up calling the bbq we procure from there 'hot guts' - makes you just want some, doesn't it???
I have a friend who lives in Sac-town (which, seriously, if you have the opportunity to call a place "sack" anything, you have to take it) so I'll be sure to point him in their direction.
ReplyDeleteLike my mom always said, "Support small businesses! Unless that small business is a meth dealership, in which case you're probably okay not supporting that." My mom is very paranoid about drug dealers.
@Reanna,
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to open a down home grilled cheese diner/dive bar. If I ever win the lotto...'Cause I wouldn't want to need the money it brought in. That way if someone acts up I can just say, "Your meal is on me. Stand up and get the fuck out."
@CLR,
Good bbq is hard to come by here, and this guy does it right. Mmmmm hot guts! I am gonna make up a song to the tune of Hot Legs by Rod Stewart. haha
@Pickleope,
Us in Sacramento love sac-town as much as folks from San Francisco love frisco. AKA we hate it. But I see your draw to it. :)
Totally tell your friend about it. Just leave out the fact that I had to swim through mountains of meth to get to the cash register. He totally doesn't need to know that part. Also, if he likes food at all you can give him my email. I know where every hidden spot, for any type of food in town is.
Ooh, I would love this place! I don't crave barbeque too often, but when I do, I looooove it :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going over a friend's house tomorrow for homemade ribs...hope he's good at it! I wish I would have time to order that sauce for him.
I love supporting local buisinesses, too. My favorite restaurants are the little, unique places that have character and awesome food. No chain restaurants!!
I'm going to the Blue Nile tonight, by the way!
I think I eat it MAYBE twice a year. Same with fried chicken. I rarely eat it so when I do, I want it to be spectacular.
ReplyDeleteMMmmmm. I think I may have to go to our good Ethiopian place, Queen Sheba, next week.
